The Chinese Challenge 2017 finals was held at Tampines Hub on 21st April 2017. The team from NYGH fought hard and clinched the championship for the third consecutive year.
Chinese Challenge 2017 was jointly organized by the Chinese media group of Singapore Press Holdings and NYGH, with the support of the following:
- Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning
- Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC)
- National Translation Committee
- Promote Mandarin Council.
The preliminary rounds held on 1st April 2017 at NYGH attracted over 1700 primary and secondary school level participants, including 266 Nanyang girls. Four of our students, Lim Tse Hwee(408), Yan Binbin(306), Chen Nan(307)and Lee Jie Xin(102), entered the semi-finals.
The semi-finals and finals of Chinese Challenge covered a wide range of disciplines, and each year, innovative forms of competing were introduced. The team from our school underwent intense training under the guidance of Mr Ng Hup Beng and Mr Wu Guangzhi.
In the 2017 semi-finals, we faced very strong opponents like Dunman High School, Hwa Chong Institution and National Junior College. While the team from NYGH fell behind at the start, the girls fought calmly and entered the finals with Dunman High School.
Our principal, Mdm Heng Boey Hong, as well as our honorary chairman of the board of directors, Mdm Wee Bee Hoon, were also on site to cheer the team on.
In the finals, there was "the last straw to clutch" (救命稻草) as an added variable to the game. Various Members of Parliament and artistes were also involved in hosting the finals, make the competition more exciting.
