National Chinese Challenge 2017 (Primary)

We hereby cordially invite your school to take part in the National Chinese Challenge, which is a competition jointly organized by The Singapore Press Holdings and Nanyang Girls’ High School. The Preliminaries of the National Chinese Challenge will be held on 1st April 2017 (Saturday), in Nanyang Girls High School.

Through this competition, we hope that students will gain a deeper understanding of the Chinese culture, and be motivated to improve their command of the Chinese language. This will also be a great platform for students to display their language abilities and interact with other Chinese language learners.

Objective of Event
  • Create an opportunity for the participants to gain a deeper understanding of the Chinese culture
  • Motivate the participants to improve their command of the Chinese language
  • Provide a platform for the participants to display their language abilities and interact with other Chinese language learners

Organizing Committee

This event is jointly organized by Singapore Press Holdings Chinese Media Group and Nanyang Girls’ High School.


Rules for Registration
  • Eligibility: Participants must be currently at the level of Primary 5 or 6, and between the ages of 10 and 12

9th March 2017 (Thursday)


Rules of Competition

The competition consists of three stages: Preliminary and Finals.

Four schools with top average scores from the Preliminary round will enter the Finals. Each school will form a team of three, with one substitute if necessary, to take part in the Challenge. There must be at least three Singaporeans in the team of four.

 

Format of competition:

1. Preliminaries:

  • Participants will complete a written quiz individually.
  • The quiz will consist of close-ended multiple-choice questions.
  • Quiz content will include: English to Chinese Translation; guessing idioms from pictures; and choosing the right word.

 

2. Finals:

  • Schools will send in teams of three (with one substitute if necessary) to compete on behalf of the school.
  • The Finals will require both spoken and written response.
  • Quiz content will include: pronunciation of words; Chinese literature knowledge

 


Judging
  • The Champion, First Runner-Up and Second Runner-Up will be determined by the overall score achieved by the team.
  • Individual Prizes will also be awarded to the top 20 scorers of the Preliminaries.

Champion

  • $2000 worth of cash & book vouchers
  • A Champion trophy
  • Certificates of Achievement

 

First Runner-up

  • $1000 worth of cash & book vouchers
  • A first runner-up trophy
  • Certificates of Achievement

 

Second Runner-up

  • $500 worth of cash & book vouchers
  • A second runner-up trophy
  • Certificates of Achievement

 

Individual Prizes (20 students)

  • $30 cash per student
  • Certificates of Achievement

 

All participants of the Preliminary round will be entitled to a 2-week complimentary digital access to SPH Chinese 3-in-1 publications.

Semi-Finals and Finals

Date: 21st April (Friday)

Time: 1300 onwards
